It’s back to school – or the start of school – for lots of York kids this week, but there’s no need for the under 5s to miss out. Starting mid-September, the popular Museum Monkey sessions kick off at York Castle Museum and York Castle Museum again. Sessions are a mixture of free flow and adult-led activities which all relate to the Early Years Curriculum. These free classes fall into two categories: Museum Baby and Early Years Explorers. Here’s everything you need to know:
These special sessions for babies are linked to the museum’s exhibitions and include storytelling, songs and sensory activities.
Sessions are on Friday mornings starting from 19th September at York Castle Museum or the Yorkshire Museum. Although sessions are free, normal admission charges apply to get into the museum (but free with a YorkCard).
Early Year Explorers
Activities for children aged two to five years old, including songs, stories, games and craft activities. Sessions are based on familiar preschool play areas which are enhanced to help children learn about the museums’ collections and exhibitions through play.
Sessions are on Thursday mornings and some Saturdays, starting from 18th September at York Castle Museum or the Yorkshire Museum. There are some special Saturday sessions on 4th October (Dads and Dinosaurs) and the very popular Christmas session (13th December). Again, although sessions are free, normal admission charges apply to get into the museum (but free with a YorkCard).
Book for a free five-week block of sessions. Bookings for September and October opens 1st September (be quick!) and bookings for November and December opens 20th October. For more details and to book, visit the York Museums Trust website.
