I’ve often thought that I’m going to look back on my thirties as the Swimming Lesson Years. Unlike other classes, which I’m happy for my kids to drop in and out of as they please (within reason, and preferably before I’ve bought the uniform), swimming is a non-negotiable. I’d love them to enjoy being in the water like I do, but more importantly they need to be able to swim to save their lives.
So with three kids to turn into competent swimmers, I feel like I’ve been on a mission to find lessons they love and that fit in with our lives. Even with our insider Little Vikings knowledge, we had a few misses before hitting the jackpot: Brightwater Swim School. It’s no exaggeration to say that signing our two eldest children (aged 6 and 3) up to classes with Brightwater has changed our lives. They’ve gone from hating swimming lessons to asking when they can go again. Our eldest is absolutely desperate to do one of the intensive holiday courses – this from the boy who used to have to be bribed into the pool.
It’s no wonder they’re happy though. Sessions with Brightwater are really friendly and fun, and progress is surprisingly fast. We go to classes at The Mount School (they’re also held at St Peter’s School) where there’s a lovely calm atmosphere in the changing area and at the poolside. The children get tons of attention and support, thanks to small class sizes and lovely staff who have clever ways to teach the strokes. From a personal perspective, I also love the fact that we’re supporting an independent local business (Brightwater is run by two sisters). If you’re also looking for swimming lessons in York for your kids, I can’t recommend Brightwater Swim School enough. May your Swimming Lesson Years be stress-free.
Brightwater Swim School run classes at The Mount and St Peter’s School in York, and also in Cundall, Pocklington and Harrogate – you can contact them on or visit the Brightwater website.
