The nights are drawing in, but we’re not gloomy about it because it means some of the best events in York’s calendar are coming up fast, kicking off with Illuminating York. This fabulous festival of light takes place during October half term (Wednesday 26th to Saturday 29th October, 6pm to 10pm) and sees the city lit up as never before. Take a wander through town to see what you can discover or book tickets for the exciting new event at York Minster (there are great value family tickets and there’s also an early bird discount if you’re fast). Don’t miss the popular bunny trail either. Here are some of the highlights (excuse the pun)…
The Shambles – If you missed the disco balls down The Shambles last year, you should make a beeline for it this year. No disco balls this time, but arcs of light that will revolve above visitors’ heads. Free.
York Minster – The team that lit up London’s Shard on New Year’s Eve will create spectacular choreographed spaces carved out of light – as if the nave of York Minster wasn’t spectacular enough already! It’s going to be quite a sight. Tickets are allocated a time slot and family ticket deals are available; ticket price includes entry to York Minster. Tickets are available from York Theatre Royal and York Minster box offices. Early bird discounts are also available until 9 October, priced at £6 and £3. Visit the York Theatre Royal Box Office to book tickets here.
York St John – The quad will become a forest of light, with coloured luminescent trees. There’ll be further exhibitions and performances by students. Free.
National Railway Museum – Head to the NRM for an experience that will bring together projection, light drawings, film and sound in the working heart of the museum, where engines are maintained and restored. Visitors will also see the return of Locos in a Different Light where the halls and locomotives are transformed with colour and light by theatre lighting design students. Free.
Bunny Light Trail – various locations between the major installations. Making a return after its debut last year will be the popular Bunny Light Trail where 50 customised bunny lights will be placed in shop and business windows across the city centre.
Illuminating York – York City Centre – Wednesday 26th to Saturday 29th October, 6pm to 10pm
