Yet another reason to thank the Rowntree family. Homestead Park was created by them back in the 1920s as a space for children to enjoy themselves, and they still do today. As well as beautiful gardens, there are grassy areas for ball games, a well-stocked play area with a separate section for under-sevens, and a pond.
We say – A good option for children up to the age of 12. Some of the equipment is quite old, but that’s part of its charm. Take a football if you fancy a kickabout. During the summer months, refuel at the Explore York pop-up library/cafe.
Good to know – Ample grassy areas and lots of benches make this a good spot for a picnic (but bring it with you – there’s nowhere very close to buy a sandwich). There’s a small car park but it does get busy and sometimes takes a while to leave as it’s just off a busy road.
