Hands-on activities for children at York Minster this summer


Get creative with hands-on craft activities inspired by the stunning surroundings of York Minster, before relaxing with some special storytelling sessions. Crafts are suitable for children aged 4 and above, drop in anytime between 10am and 3pm on Wednesdays throughout the summer holidays (27th July to 4th September). Storytelling also runs on Saturdays at 10.30am. Children taking part in craft activities can earn stickers towards their Children’s University Passport, as well as the Arts Award Discover certificate! Here’s what’s lined up:

  • 27th July, Sculpt your own bird shaped ornament.
  • 3rd August, Create a sparkling sun catcher.
  • 10th August, Make your own decorative clay tile.
  • 17th August, Design and make a metalwork-style badge.
  • 24th August, Create your own family banner in fabric.
  • 31st August, Try your hand at weaving your own keepsake.

Discovery Tours
How many blue whales could you fit inside the Minster? Find out about fun facts like this on a free family-friendly Discovery Tour at 2pm on Wednesdays, or 11:30 on Saturdays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. Taking around 45 minutes, these are perfect for families on-the-go.
Little Explorer Backpacks
Young adventurers can also borrow the popular Little Explorer Backpacks to investigate the cathedral’s awe-inspiring features, explore nooks and crannies with the Monty Monkey treasure hunt, or enjoy a range of books from the story chest.
Each craft activity costs £2.50 per participant; all other family activities above are free of any additional charge, and standard admission prices apply. Admission is free for York residents with a valid York Card.
