Half Term Ideas: Smartie fun at York’s CHOCOLATE Story

Things to do in York with kidsThis half term, York’s CHOCOLATE Story will be paying homage to the city’s most colourful sweet and one of Britain’s best loved brands – Smarties! Visitors will be able to get hands on and learn more about the world famous brand, which was created in York over 70 years ago.

In September 2013 a poll of over 5,000 people, carried out by York’s CHOCOLATE Story, voted Smarties the nation’s favourite sweet brand, from the many developed and produced in York – the UK’s home of chocolate. Originally introduced by Rowntree’s in York in 1882 as ‘Chocolate Beans’ and rebranded as ‘Smarties’ in 1937 – the sweets have been a popular favourite for over a century and are now sold across the globe.

Visitors will also be able to put their dexterity and speed to the test by attempting to sort thirty coloured Smarties using only chopsticks! The current Guinness World Record stands at an incredible 31.5 seconds and is held by Yinger Guan of China. There will also be a chance to take the Smarties-themed trail and discover some fascinating facts about the brand during the guided tour as well as making and decorating a chocolate bar with Smarties. Yum.
