Free entry to York Castle Museum, York Art Gallery and the Yorkshire Museum!

York Castle MuseumSome of York’s top, and most child-friendly, attractions, will open their doors to residents later this month. On Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th June, York residents can visit the York Museums Trust attractions – York Castle Museum, York Art Gallery and the Yorkshire Museum – for free. This includes entry to two new major exhibitions – Shaping the Body at York Castle Museum and the York Art Gallery’s Truth and Memory – as well as a Fossil Roadshow at the Yorkshire Museum. Jorvik’s new exhibition JORVIK: Home and Abroad at York St Mary’s is also included in the open weekend. Any resident with a York Card or council tax bill from the City of York Council can gain free access.

We love all of the YMT attractions, but our firm family favourite is York Castle Museum (which also won Best Attraction in the Little Vikings Awards 2016). In fact, our eldest (6) asks to go there most weeks. His favourite part is Kirkgate, the Victorian street (‘it’s cool because it’s like a real street from the olden days’), but last time we visited we spent just as much time at the 1914 exhibition which really brings World War One to life. We’re big fans of the Yorkshire Museum too, and York Art Gallery always inspires our kids to get creative with the fun children’s activities dotted throughout the building. So stick the open weekend in your diary and take your kids along to these jewels in York’s crown (and justify a nice coffee and cake afterwards with the money you’ve saved).

York Museums Trust Open Weekend – Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th June 2016 – York Castle Museum, Yorkshire Museum, York Art Gallery and York St Marys – take a York Card or CYC council tax bill as proof of residence. For more details visit the York Museums Trust website
