Deciding between a family walk around York city centre or a woodland walk nearby? It’s a dilemma! We’re lucky to have lots of great options for places to walk with kids. York itself is a very walkable city – all of the main attractions, from York Minster at one end to the JORVIK Viking Centre at the other – are a short stroll apart, which is the perfect excuse to ditch the car (not to mention the extortionate parking charges and difficulty in finding a car park). There are several excellent bus services, the rail connections are excellent and it’s a bike-friendly city too. A walk around York is a brilliant thing to do with kids, and the iconic 3km walk around York’s city walls is a unique experience that’s completely free of charge. 

For the ultimate recharging experience, though, a walk in the woods can’t be beaten: fresh air, oodles of space, interesting things to discover, wildlife to spot and more sticks than you can, well, shake a stick at, it’s a paradise for kids in particular. There are lots of excellent woodland walks near York, some within a short drive and others slightly further afield.

We’ve handpicked nine of our favourite woodland walks in and near York, from small nature reserves that are perfect for little legs to forests with enough space to tire out bigger kids. Several are free to visit, and some have a café for that all-important treat afterwards. Pack your snacks, pull on your wellies and see where the path takes you.

The nine best woodland walks near York

Knavesmire Wood

Knavesmire Wood is a magical place to escape to that children love, and it’s one of the closest woods to York city centre. It’s not big but it’s beautiful, with towering trees, greenery galore and lots to explore. Look hard enough and you’ll find dens, rope swings and plenty of trees to climb. Right on the edge of York Racecourse, we often combine a visit with a bike ride around the racecourse. Knavesmire Wood is a Woodland Trust place that’s free to enter. If you’re lucky, you might spot a woodpecker too. No parking, no loos, no cafe!

Moorlands Nature Reserve

Moorlands Nature Reserve might not be as well known as other green spaces in York, but it has a large and loyal fan base among Yorkshire families. Those lucky enough to live in nearby villages use this Yorkshire Wildlife Trust place as their second garden, and it’s not hard to see why. This little woodland punches above its weight, with a stunning collection of trees and wildlife that are a pleasure to wander through at any time of year. It’s a nature spotter’s paradise, too, so pack binoculars or a bird-spotting book and see what you can find. If you’re looking for a short but beautiful walk just outside York, Moorlands is a great option. Read our five reasons to visit Moorlands here. Good to know – Entry’s free, with a mostly flat 1km circular route that’s ideal for a shorter adventure. There’s limited roadside parking near the entrance, but no toilets or café on site.

Dreamery Gardens – England’s Fairy Sanctuary

Dreamery Gardens (formerly known as Northwood Trail) is a family-run woodland attraction near York, designed to enchant both adults and children. Spanning 100 acres of beautiful woodland, it features a 1.5km nature trail filled with magical surprises. Highlights include a willow-walled maze, fairy doors on trees, fairy treehouses connected by rope bridges, a tree stump village, a giant mushroom ring, Elven thrones and more. This rustic attraction offers a year-round escape for families to reconnect with the magic of the outdoors. The on-site cafe, Northwood Kitchen, is a beautiful space to relax and refuel in, and their woodland-themed afternoon tea is gorgeous (read our review here)

Askham Bog

If it’s some fresh air and exercise in a beautiful setting that you’re after, but you don’t want to travel far from York, Askham Bog is just the place. A stone’s throw from the city, it’s an easy circular walk with plenty to see. Askam Bog is looked after by the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, so it’s no surprise that it’s host to a huge amount of wildlife. If you’ve got a little one or just have time for a short walk, stick to the path. For older kids in the mood for adventure, climb over the stiles and see what you can discover. Hagg Wood

Hagg Wood is an ancient wood just outside Dunnington, and it’s somewhere we’d wholeheartedly recommend for a trip with kids. It’s beautiful: tall trees, massive ferns, an abundance of wildlife and an interesting history. If you want to let your kids run free, make dens, collect sticks and get some fresh air, it’s a brilliant option not far from York city centre by car. There’s some local debate over parking, so you’re best off parking in the village and walking.

Dalby Forest

If you’re looking for woods to escape to near York, Dalby Forest is a brilliant destination. It’s one of Yorkshire’s most stunning spots and one of our favourite places near York for a walk. In under an hour from York, find yourself embarking on a bike or walking trail (all abilities; clearly marked) or enjoying an amazing adventure playground that’s suitable for all ages. The family trails, including Room on the Broom and Gruffalo Orienteering, are perfect for kids by giving them things to look out for along the way. There’s an adventure playground too, but leave time to explore beyond it: with woodland paths, walking routes and wildlife to spot, there’s plenty to keep everyone busy. Parking charges apply, and some activities cost extra.

Castle Howard Arboretum

Just over the road from Castle Howard, Castle Howard Arboretum is a brilliant place for a family walk in the woods near York. There are 120 acres to explore, with ponds, lakes and woodland galore, and an impressive collection of trees from across the globe that you won’t have seen before. Don’t miss the red squirrel enclosure, where you might just see them as they scamper about. It’s included in admission, and well worth taking your time over: walk slowly and quietly for the best chance of spotting one. There’s a lovely café serving drinks and home-cooked food too.

Sutton Bank and the White Horse at Kilburn

Sutton Bank is one of the most popular spots for a walk in the North York Moors, and a lovely day out from York. Park at the Visitor Centre (fee applies) and do the circular walk that takes in the White Horse at Kilburn and a walk through the woods. You’ll find a cafe, shop and helpful info at the Visitor Centre, and there’s bike hire too. A short walk from the car park you’ll find ‘England’s Finest View’ – cameras at the ready! Falling Foss and May Beck

Falling Foss is a magical place for a woodland walk, just outside Whitby.  If you’re looking for a really pretty walk that isn’t too taxing for younger children (and has the prospect of caffeine en route), then this is a good option. Reward your walking efforts with refreshments at the Falling Foss Tea Garden (let’s face it – the prospect of a cake and juice by the stream is a great incentive for even the most reluctant walkers). It’s hard to think of a more idyllic spot to sit and watch the wildlife go by. It gets busy during peak times, like the summer holidays, so we’d always advise arriving early if possible. Here are our five reasons to visit Falling Foss with kids.

Christmas in York is wonderful, but after a busy morning in the shops, a warm seat and a change of scenery can feel like a gift in itself. This year, City Cruises York has two ways to enjoy the festive season on the River Ouse: a Santa Experience for families and a Festive Sightseeing Cruise when you fancy a break from the Christmas chaos.

York’s Award-Winning Santa Experience

Forget standing in a long grotto queue! During this one-hour experience – voted the winner of The Best of York Award 2025 – children can write a letter to Santa on board before meeting the big man himself. Each child receives a personalised present, a Christmas gift bag, a fruit drink and a chocolate bar. Grown-ups get a tea or coffee and a mince pie included with their ticket, with mulled wine and other drinks available to buy at the bar, so there’s something for everyone! We’ve been ourselves and really enjoyed it – it’s a uniquely York experience, and really memorable.

The saloon is enclosed and heated, so there’s somewhere cosy to settle in whatever the weather. If high river levels mean the boat can’t sail, the Santa Experience goes ahead at the dock and you’ll receive a complimentary sightseeing voucher for another visit.

Festive sightseeing on the River Ouse

Need to rest your feet after Christmas shopping? The Festive Sightseeing Cruise offers a gentler hour on the water, with riverside views, live commentary from the captain and Christmas music.

You can stay warm in the heated indoor saloon, and your ticket includes a mince pie plus a choice of mulled wine, tea, coffee or hot chocolate. Cruises depart from King’s Staith Landing throughout November and December. Walk-up tickets may be available, but booking ahead is a good idea if you’re planning your day around it.

Ghosts in the Gardens

York’s ghostly residents are back, with 70 wire-mesh sculptures hiding in 32 locations across the city. Look out for familiar faces and ten brand-new ghosts in gardens, historic buildings and some unexpected places. The Gunpowder Plot at The Bar Convent

Think you know the story of Guy Fawkes? The Bar Convent’s new exhibition takes families beyond the familiar Bonfire Night tale to discover York’s links to the Gunpowder Plot. Go inside Micklegate Bar

Most families have walked beneath Micklegate Bar, but York Unlocked is a chance to discover the space inside. This medieval gateway was the traditional entrance for visiting monarchs, although its history has a gruesome side too: the heads of rebels and traitors were once displayed above it. Today, it’s home to a print studio and gallery.

Take a look around King’s Manor

Just off Exhibition Square, King’s Manor began as a medieval manor associated with St Mary’s Abbey and later became the headquarters of the Council of the North. Henry VIII visited in 1541. It’s an easy stop to add to a family wander around Museum Gardens and the city centre.

Visit the Hospitium in Museum Gardens

Make the most of a Sunday stroll through Museum Gardens with a visit inside the Hospitium. This 14th-century building may once have housed guests of St Mary’s Abbey or served as a warehouse. See if the children can spot how different its timber-framed upper floor looks from the stonework below.

Climb Fishergate Postern Tower

A medieval tower with an original stone spiral staircase and a 500-year-old loo? That’s the sort of York history children can get excited about. Fishergate Postern Tower has changed very little since it was built, and there are displays to help bring its story to life.

York Unlocked takes place on Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 October 2026, and entry to participating buildings is free. The places above have drop-in opening hours, so you don’t need to reserve tickets. Other experiences, including the Bettys tours, Bishopthorpe Palace and Terry’s Factory Clock Tower, do require advance booking.

Access and facilities vary between buildings, and many venues don’t have public toilets. Check the York Unlocked buildings page, digital programme and accessibility information before setting off, as details may change.

Looking for something fun to do with the family in the city this October Half-Term?  York Castle Museum is bringing Yorkshire’s fascinating past to life with a week of storytelling, historic traditions, seasonal activities and immersive family experiences.

Special seasonal activities

Join HistoryRiot on Kirkgate, Britain’s oldest recreated street, for Tales of Nut-Crack Night. Performances will run throughout the day, every day, from Saturday 24 – Saturday 31 October, sharing fascinating stories about how people in Yorkshire celebrated All Hallow’s Eve – or Nut-Crack Night, as it was known during the Victorian era.

Budding bakers can head to the Castle Kitchen during their visit, located off the Secrets of Dress gallery, to watch traditional Soul Cake baking demonstrations on Saturday 24, Monday 26, Wednesday 28 and Saturday 31 October between 10.30am – 4pm. These sweet, spiced cakes were traditionally made around Halloween, offering families a delicious glimpse into Yorkshire’s culinary history. There’ll be samples on offer, and you can pick up a recipe to try making them yourself at home during the Half-Term!

Explore York Castle Prison cells with two new experiences!

The museum’s authentic York Castle Prison cells are the setting for two new immersive Prison Escape Stories experiences. The main trail is recommended for adults and older children and there’s another experience that’s been specially designed for younger children focused on spotting the historic graffiti. Families can collect a gaoler’s (jailor’s) key, complete fun challenges and uncover the true stories behind historic prison escapes, The Matron’s Trap, The Escape of 1839 and The Escape That Never Was.

Daily activities for all ages

With a variety of creative activities, talks and trails available every day, alongside amazing exhibitions and displays covering 400 years of York’s past, there’s something to entertain the whole family during your visit.

The community exhibition, Sugar, Skill and Shiftwork: York’s Confectionery Workers has been extended to March 2027 due to its popularity. Experience a range of sensory stations throughout, giving you an insight into the sights, smells and sounds of York’s chocolate factories.

Self-led activities include the Little Spotters activity sheet, available in the Secrets of Dress exhibition, the Creative Studio drawing activities, dressing up in Secrets of Dress, on Kirkgate and the Sixties Street, the Play Kitchen and Time Traveller’s Activity Trail booklet.

Don’t miss the daily Kirkgate Talks at 11.30am and 2pm which tell the story behind the creation of the famous Victorian street, and the insightful Cells Talks at 11.30am and 2.30pm that reveal the secrets of York Castle Prison and its notorious inmates.

All activities, experiences and exhibitions at York Castle Museum are included in general admission, including the Period Rooms, World War One gallery and York Castle Prison cells, where famous highwayman Dick Turpin was once held.

If you don’t have time to cover it all, you can use your tickets to visit again for free as many times as you like for 12 months. Family saver tickets are available and York resident children under 16 go free.

5. NEW Screen Acting Workshop, 7 & 8 November

In this practical workshop, participants devise and create an original super short film in a single shot from scratch, combining scripting, acting, choreography and filming. 6. VR & Games Lab, 4-8 November

Enter new and immersive worlds at our Games and VR Labs at the National Centre for Early Music. Play new independent games and experience cinema in 360 degrees. With projects that are suitable for U and PG audiences, these interactive labs will transport you into the heart of the story, immersing audiences of all ages. This unique environment allows parents to see firsthand how interactive technologies can inspire learning, play, and creativity in their children. No other event in York provides this level of exposure to immersive digital experiences.

7. UNESCO City of Media Arts EXPO, 5-6 November

York’s status as a UNESCO City of Media Arts puts the city on the global stage for innovation in digital media and storytelling, and this year’s festival brings that to life for local families. The EXPO at De Grey Rooms gives children and adults the rare opportunity to see how creative industries operate, from VFX and graphic design to interactive storytelling and digital technology. 

This year’s event also features an inspiring workshop programme presented by York Business School at York St John University with speakers from Innovate UK, Argonon and Screen Yorkshire. Parents can explore the many pathways and career opportunities available in media arts with their children, opening conversations about future ambitions and inspiring young people to dream bigger than ever before.

8. New Music Stage, 7 November

Enjoy a day of live music with the whole family. Discover the New Music Stage at Aesthetica, an all-day music festival, bringing together live performances from 10 breakthrough artists, who are creating music across an array of genres, including indie, folk, jazz and pop. Taking place at York Theatre Royal, this is the place to see the headliners of tomorrow. The day features panels, masterclasses and opportunities to meet BBC Introducing on Radio 1, Beggars Group (Rough Trade & Matador Records), GQ, Dazed, Universal Music, Futuresound Group (Live at York Museum Gardens) and more. This is an invitation to hear what’s next in music.

9. Immersive Media Arts Trail, 4-8 November

Three new installations will light up York this November. For the Radical Listening Immersive Media Arts Trail, Audible and Aesthetica invited artists to create installation-based artworks where sound is central to the experience. From 4-8 November, see installations from Squidsoup, the acclaimed light, sound and technology pioneers; Steve Messam, whose works are characterised by their colour and scale; and Being Now Here, who specialises in immersive and interactive installations. 

The trail runs from Exhibition Square and York Theatre Royal to King’s Square and is free to all.

10. Explore Aesthetica’s Full Programme, 4-8 November

The Screening Programme boasts more than 300 films, spanning Animation, Comedy, Dance, Drama, Documentary, Family Friendly and more. These screenings shine a spotlight on both established and new talent, offering you the chance to discover stories from around the world, with many going on to win BAFTAs and Oscars. This year’s screening programme is rich with innovative storytelling and features stars such as Aisling Bea, David Jonsson, Maxine Peake, Michael Sheen and Stephen Fry.

Aesthetica invites some of the most renowned names in screen and media to York through its award-winning masterclass series. Hear from organisations including Aardman, BBC Introducing on Radio 1, BBC Writers, Film4, Framestore, ITV, Neal Street Productions, Ridley Scott Associates and Ubisoft.

Aesthetica’s family programme ensures that children and adults alike feel part of a vibrant festival unlike anything else in the city.

Supporting York’s hospitality businesses

York Restaurant Week is organised by York BID and takes place twice a year, usually in March and October. Since the campaign began, more than 210,000 vouchers have been downloaded, generating an estimated £7 million for York’s economy. It’s a great way to save money while supporting the city’s brilliant independent cafés, restaurants and hospitality businesses. Find out more from The York BID.

There’s something spooky going on in York this autumn as Ghosts in the Gardens returns for 2026, and it’s bigger than ever.

From Saturday 19 September to Sunday 1 November 2026, 70 ghostly wire-mesh sculptures will appear in gardens, ruins and historic locations across York. The trail is completely free, making it a brilliant way to explore the city with the kids without spending a penny.

Created by York-based Unconventional Design, the translucent figures are inspired by characters, creatures and stories from York’s past. There are soldiers, Vikings, monks, animals and plenty of other eerie residents to find, including 25 new ghosts for 2026.

Look out for a plague doctor on Library Lawn, a medieval archer at Clifford’s Tower, a penny-farthing rider in St Anthony’s Gardens and a Roman soldier in York Museum Gardens. There’s even a tribute to much-loved Long Boi at Holy Trinity Church on Goodramgate!

The ghosts can be found in more than 30 locations across the city, including York Museum Gardens, Barley Hall, Treasurer’s House, the Shambles, Merchant Adventurers’ Hall and York Railway Station. Opening hours vary at some locations, but plenty of the sculptures can be seen from public spaces at any time.

You can pick up a trail map from York’s Visitor Information Centre on Back Swinegate or download one from the York BID website. It’s one of our absolute favourite autumn things to do in York, so we’d wholeheartedly recommend adding it to your plans.

Ghosts After Dark returns for 2026

The daytime trail is free, but families can also book tickets for Ghosts After Dark, taking place from 4 to 8 November 2026.

This atmospheric evening event will bring all 70 sculptures together across York Museum Gardens, King’s Manor Courtyard and Library Lawn, with lighting, smoke, sound and live storytelling. New for 2026, visitors can explore King’s Manor Courtyard and Library Lawn after dark, browse a night market and experience an interactive artwork by Lou Chapelle. There’s also an immersive witch encounter called The Cell, which may include jump scares.

Ghosts After Dark is designed to be fun and atmospheric rather than frightening, although some stories and experiences may not suit very young children so you can always choose to avoid them.

Grab your broomsticks and cauldrons, it’s time for spooky season on the NYMR! This October half term, Kids Go Free on standard services, with one free child ticket per fare paying adult, so bring the whole family along for a day of Halloween fun.

Steam Through the Moors for Less

First, the good news for family budgets. On running days from 24 October to 1 November, our School Holiday Savings Rate will be in place, giving families the chance to enjoy a journey on one of the UK’s most iconic heritage railways at a discounted rate. Plus kids go free on standard services with one free child ticket per fare-paying adult. Whether you opt for a hop-on, hop-off Day Rover to explore all the stops from Pickering to Whitby, or a shorter journey between neighbouring stations, you can build a full day out without the price tag that usually comes with school holidays. 

Trick or Treat at the Station Shops

Grab your broomsticks and dust off the capes — it’s time to go full Halloween at the NYMR. Dress the family in your best costumes and head to the Station Shops at Pickering, Goathland or Grosmont, where a “Trick or Treat” earns a free chocolate treat (subject to availability, no booking required). Keep an eye out for spooky selfie frames dotted around the stations, and share your best ghoulish looks on social media. After all that excitement, warm up in one of the station tea rooms with a hot chocolate or a Halloween biscuit — all three stations are open throughout the half term running days.

Harry Potter fans take note: Goathland Station, famously used as Hogsmeade Station in the first film, has an extended selection of Harry Potter gifts and memorabilia in its shop. Pick up a bottle of witches’ potion or some themed gifts to take a little Halloween magic home.

Little Ones’ Play Sessions at Pickering

The Pickering Classroom hosts two sessions perfect for younger children during the week. On Tuesday 27 October (10am–12pm), Tiny Engine Tuesdays is a free, drop-in session for ages 0–10 — relaxed, train-themed free play with a Halloween twist, no booking needed. The following day (Wednesday 28 October), the Under 5s Stay & Play (booking required) offers a sensory wonderland of soft play, train tracks, foam blocks and push-along trains for the very youngest visitors. Two mornings, two brilliant reasons to start your half term at the station.

Not Just for Little Ones…?

If you have older children or teenagers in tow, the Mad Alice Ghost Train (ages 14+) takes passengers through the haunted North York Moors after dark, with ghostly storytelling and atmospheric entertainment.
