Pick Your Own Apples at Ampleforth Abbey

Trade the trolley for a trug at Ampleforth Abbey’s 200-year-old heritage orchard, one of the largest in the North of England. With 1,500 trees and over 60 apple varieties to explore, kids can hunt out their favourites while learning how the harvest becomes the Abbey’s own apple juice and cider in the on-site Cider Mill. Entry’s free, you just pay for whatever you pick, and the tea room’s open for a well-earned treat afterwards.

Brainiac Live

If your kids love things that fizz, bang and explode, Brainiac Live will be right up their street. York National Book Fair

Bookworms, this one’s for you! Browse over 150 booksellers and 100,000 books, maps and prints under one roof at York Racecourse, from ancient treasures to new releases. It’s a lovely, low-key wander for curious kids and collectors alike, with a café on hand for refreshment breaks. Entry’s just £2, and under-16s get in free, too.

York’s much-loved ghosts will gather in York Museum Gardens once again this November, and Ghosts After Dark promises to be bigger, spookier and more atmospheric than ever. Taking place from Wednesday 4th to Sunday 8th November 2026, the event will bring all 70 sculptures from York BID’s Ghosts in the Gardens trail together in one spectacular setting. Bigger for 2026

This year, there will be 70 ghosts to discover, along with an expanded route, six live storytellers, atmospheric lighting, fog and plenty of surprises hiding in the darkness. The experience will also extend beyond the main Museum Gardens and into several fascinating historic spaces nearby, including King’s Manor courtyard and Library Lawn. Visitors will follow a route that takes in the Anglian Tower, Edible Wood, Artists’ Garden, St Olave’s Churchyard and the area beside York Art Gallery. It’s a fun way to explore York’s lesser known corners when the sun goes down.

Live storytelling and a market

Six spooktacular storytellers will be waiting along the route to bring York’s ghostly tales and haunting history to life – one of the highlights of the event. There will also be a new interactive experience for 2026, as well as the first Ghosts After Dark night market! Visitors can browse the stalls before or after exploring the trail, making it easy to turn your visit into a full autumn evening in York. If there’s one thing we know, it’s that kids find it really exciting to be outside when it’s dark, and this is the perfect excuse to push back bedtime and have a lovely evening in York together.

Is Ghosts After Dark suitable for families?

Ghosts After Dark is an atmospheric evening event, but children are welcome and tickets cost just £2. You can explore at your own pace and skip any of the stories if younger children aren’t keen. The experience should take approximately 90 minutes to complete. Timed admission must be booked in advance, with entry slots available until 8pm each evening.

One of York’s favourite festive destinations is getting even better – and more sparkly – this Christmas, with the arrival of a brand new outdoor ice rink in the heart of Museum Gardens! THOR’S on ICE will open alongside THOR’S tipi, combining delicious drinks, food and live entertainment with one of the most Christmassy of activities: ice skating!

Admission’s free at the National Railway Museum

A visit to the National Railway Museum is a must on your visit to York: it’s one of the country’s finest attractions and admission is free! There’s a changing programme of activities and lots for kids to enjoy, including a small indoor play area and an outdoor one too. Keep an eye out during the school holidays for special activities, often with an engineering focus. Although there are a couple of good quality places to eat, you are welcome to take your own food and drink, which helps keep costs down, and there are plenty of places to sit. Little Vikings I Spy Family Walking Trail – Free!

Recommended by The Sunday Times! I spy with my little eye a clock, a cat and a flag! With the help of three children, we’ve put together a lovely circular route with twenty-two weird and wonderful things to spot along the way. Starting and ending on Museum Street, the Little Vikings I Spy Trail will have you strolling down snickleways (yes, it’s a word!), gawping at the city’s medieval gates and ambling down the Shambles, ticking off iconic and eccentric landmarks along the way. This new walking trail around York is available all year round – all you have to do is collect the map and get your shoes and coats on! The map should be all that you need – follow the route and see how many things you can tick off. For younger children, why not just do the first ten?

Pick up a map from the Visit York Information Centre on Parliament Street or click HERE to download it and print it out. NEW! You can now access an interactive 3D version of the map from our website, so you can follow the route on your phone and pick up some facts along the way.

Explore York’s City Walls (it’s free!)

Why not take a walk around York’s city walls? There’s almost 3.5km of medieval wall to choose from, all with fantastic views, and it’s free. If little feet aren’t up to a big hike, just choose a small section. Some sections have railings running alongside them but others don’t: good to know if you’ve got a little livewire on your hands. The section from York Art Gallery/Bootham Bar to Micklegate Bar is fully fenced and also has incredible views of York Minster. It’s easy to hop off once you’ve had enough. Note that it’s closed during frosty/snowy weather for safety reasons.

Kids go free at many York attractions

York is full of exciting and inspiring museums and other attractions that offer a brilliant experience for children, and many can be enjoyed by kids for free. Often the adult tickets are valid for 12 months, so you can return as many times as you like within the year:

• Children who are York residents go free at The Yorkshire Museum, and all under 5s go free. Adult tickets to The Yorkshire Museum are valid for 12 months. It’s a brilliant pocket-sized museum where you can explore Yorkshire’s history, including the ever-popular Jurassic Yorkshire dinosaur exhibition.

• Children who are York residents also go free at York Castle Museum, and under 5s go free too. Explore York’s history, walk down the Victorian street and relive the swinging sixties at this fantastic attraction.

• Under 5s go free at JORVIK Viking Centre, DIG and Barley Hall, and paid tickets are valid for 12 months. That’s a whole year of entertainment for the price of entry! All of the JORVIK attractions are excellent and have fun interactive elements for children.

• Accompanying under 16s go free to York Minster, and all York residents with valid proof of address gain entry to York Minster free of charge, too.

• Under fives go free at York Mansion House, and all York residents also get a 50% discount at York Mansion House too.

• Under fours go free at York’s Chocolate Story, where you can find out about York’s chocolate past and even make your own sweet creation.

Head to York’s libraries for free

York has some fantastic libraries that run activities for children all year long that are free or inexpensive, and they are also great places to drop in and browse or grab a coffee and cake. Don’t miss York’s Summer Reading Challenge either – it’s a great way to keep little bookworms reading during the long holidays. Explore York Library, on Museum Street, is the main central library and it’s a lovely space for families. It’s right next to York Museum Gardens, which is a great place to let kids run about (and again, it’s free).

Lark about in York’s parks, gardens and green spaces where admission’s free

York is full of fantastic parks and open spaces, available to everyone at no cost. Take a picnic if you’re peckish. For squirrel-spotting and balancing along the ruins (where permitted!), try York Museum Gardens.

There’s no play equipment as such, but plenty of history, nature and open space to appeal, making it a great thing to do in York for free. Dean’s Park, behind York Minster, is a lovely green space too. For swings, slides, ducks and more, try Rowntree Park. We’re very fond of Homestead Park, too, with its large play areas, outdoor gym equipment and pop-up Reading Cafe during the spring and summer months. Further afield, other green spaces we love are Askham Bog Nature Reserve, Moorlands Nature Reserve, Hagg Wood and Falling Foss.

Stroll through York’s streets

Wandering around the city streets is one of the best free things you can do in York. There’s plenty to interest everyone, from fantastic street entertainers to genuinely talented buskers to tiny alleyways and secret passages, cobbled streets and grand squares. Marvel at the Minster, take a turn around the bottom of Clifford’s Tower, skip along Whip-ma-whop-ma-gate and amble through the Shambles.

Spot the furry friends on the free York Cat Trail

One of the best ways to make a walk with kids even more fun is by following a trail, and the York Cat Trail is one of the best. It’s free too! Statues of cats have been placed on buildings in York for around two centuries, although statues, since removed or rotted, are thought to date from medieval times. The original cat statues were placed on buildings to frighten away rats and mice, which can carry plague and illness. They were also thought to ward off wandering evil spirits and generally to bestow good luck and good health on citizens who needed feline friends to ensure a good night’s sleep in old and temptingly chewy timber-framed buildings! Stretch little legs and go for a walk or bike ride

Ducks, otters, swans and even an ice cream boat: there’s a lot to spot on a walk along the river Ouse, accessible from York city centre. Alternatively, grab your bikes (or hire them – Get Cycling is a great place for family bike hire, including inclusive options) and enjoy a ride along the cycle tracks (York’s solar system trail is very popular). Trips to the great Yorkshire countryside needn’t cost much either – pack a picnic, find a free parking space and let the kids run wild. Another cracking day out, and only adults pay for admission. Yorkshire Sculpture Park is a fantastic outdoor day out that inspires (and tires little legs). There are some nice cafes and the Visitor Centre is worth a visit. National Railway Museum – Indoor Galleries and Wonderlab

Explore, learn and play at the National Railway Museum, unofficially York’s umbrella as it’s the perfect rainy day spot in York. There’s lots for children to see and do, with incredible engines and hands-on activities galore. There’s a small indoor play area for younger children, and you can take a ride on the miniature train (small charge) or the road train into town (small charge). Children’s activities run during the school holidays. JORVIK Viking Centre

Travel back to Viking-age York without getting wet at JORVIK Viking Centre, one of the city’s top attractions. The famous ride through the recreated village is warm, dry and a fascinating way to bring Viking history to life. It’s also really memorable – our kids still talk about their first visit.

One of our favourite museums in York – and a real memory-maker – is York Castle Museum. Step onto Kirkgate and wander through recreated Victorian shops, homes and historic displays. There’s a lot to see, so you can easily make a full morning or afternoon of it, and it’s a great way to escape the rain. We can’t get through a visit without a trip to the Victorian sweet shop for a lolly or sugar mouse!

The Yorkshire Museum – Dinosaurs, Romans and more

Huge Soft Play at The Web Adventure Park

Let them climb, slide and play to their heart’s content at the Web Adventure Park (formerly known as Creepy Crawlies). There’s a huge indoor climbing frame, play village, football zone, fairground rides, ninja warrior course, animal area, dedicated baby zone and loads more to keep them occupied indoors and out. It’s basically heaven for children, and you can easily stay all day. If the weather perks up, head outside for the massive outdoor adventure play area, to meet the animals and enjoy the fairground rides (check if they’re open before you travel).

Tackle the Ninja Warrior Course at Agility York

Agility is an exciting and unique centre, with two ninja warrior style obstacle courses catering for the whole family as well as a small soft play area for younger children. They also have fitness classes (including buggy fit and family fit), parkour and a lovely cafe, The Shack. Their birthday parties have even won a Little Vikings Award.

Clip’n’Climb at York Leisure Centre

Families used to have to travel out of York for a clip and climb experience, but not anymore! The Clip ‘N Climb arena at York Leisure Centre at Monks Cross is fantastic, with a huge variety of climbing challenges for all ages from 4+. Book it for an hour or even book a birthday party for some active fun with a difference. They also have swimming, soft play and other activities such as badminton and football.

Hollywood Bowl

If bowling’s your thing, Hollywood Bowl is guaranteed to please the whole family. It’s an all-singing, all-dancing experience with arcade games, American diner, and 24 lanes of tenpin fun. There’s even a VIP experience if you feel like splashing out. Just along the road, Tenpin York is another fun bowling option, and they do laser tag too.

Swimming (various pools across York)

With a 25-metre pool and small training pool, York Sport is very popular with families in York looking to swim. They have Little Vikings Award-winning swimming lessons and host birthday parties too. Head to the cinema

City Screen is a lovely city-centre cinema with a fab café and riverside views. It has a regular Saturday morning kids’ club, toddler time (usually a short 30-minute show), Big Scream viewings for parents/carers with babies under a year old and autism-friendly showings (City Screen Picturehouse, 13-17 Coney Street, York YO1 9QL). Everyman York is a sumptuous cinema showing mainstream and arthouse films. The Little York Ghost Hunt (FREE!)

One of the best October half-term events on the Yorkshire coast returns for 2026! 🎃 Pumpkin picking and autumn adventures

Pumpkin picking at The Balloon Tree

Nothing says ‘autumn’ more than a giant orange root vegetable, so celebrate the season with a spot of pumpkin picking. Autumn and October Half Term at Castle Howard

Enjoy a colourful autumn day out at Castle Howard. Search for pesky pumpkins hiding around the House, burn off some energy on the rope bridges, slides and zip wire at Skelf Island Adventure Playground, and admire the seasonal colours in the Arboretum. Families can also visit the red squirrel enclosure and pick up pumpkins and gourds from the Farm Shop and Garden Centre.

This lovely family-run sourdough bakery, opposite Clifford’s Tower, has become a firm favourite with bread lovers across the city since its recent opening. Famed for its sourdough loaves, the coffee and creative pastries are some of the best in the city too.

We love – The plain croissants are a masterpiece, and two of their large loaves keep us going for most of the week.

Seating – No, but you’re right next to Tower Gardens and the river, with benches and beautiful views.

2. The Bluebird Bakery

Make a beeline for The Bluebird Bakery for loaves, cakes, pastries and more. The little shop on Little Shambles is perfectly located for picking up an epic cheese straw on the run, but head out to the Acomb cafe and you can sit in and enjoy lunch while your children amuse themselves in the little children’s corner. 

We love – The salted caramel slices, brownies and 5 spice chickpea rolls

Seating – Not at Little Shambles, but the cafe in Acomb has large sharing tables and window seats and is spacious and welcoming.

3. Parlormade Scone House

If it’s scones you’re after, it’s Parlormade that you need. This wonderfully quirky cafe is THE place to go for scones in York. There’s an ever-changing menu of sweet and savoury flavours to take away, or sit in the cafe and enjoy a full cream tea with a good old pot of Yorkshire. If scones aren’t your thing (really?!), there are other things on the menu too!

We love – All of it, but if we had to choose a favourite, then the cheese scones would get our vote. 

Seating – Yes, tables and stairs upstairs in the cafe. Due to the age of the building, it’s sadly not accessible for wheelchairs or buggies.

4. Little Blondie Bakehouse

For sweet treats with a twist, head to Little Blondie Bakehouse on Walmgate. This colourful little place has built up quite a following, thanks to creative takes on all things sweet. The cake cups are epic, and there are delicious pastries, cheesecakes, brownies and much more. The coffee is delicious too.

We love – The viral crookies and blondies of all flavours. 

Seating – No, but you’re in the city centre with plenty of seating nearby.

5. Heppni Bakeri

Brand new to the York bakery scene, Heppni Bakeri is a bright, welcoming place to pick up a freshly made bake or sit in and enjoy a coffee and cake with the family. There’s a Scandi-inspired twist, and everything we’ve tasted so far has been delicious.

We love – The cardamom buns are unbelievably good, and the banana bread is a favourite with our kids.

6. Flori

This lovely little neighbourhood bakery is a popular spot for early-rising parents in need of a caffeine and pastry fix. Expect beautiful handcrafted pastries, good coffee and queues on a weekend morning. 

We love – The cardamom rolls and seasonal specials using fruit from the Flori allotment. 

Seating – A small amount of seating, but Rowntree Park is a two-minute walk if you want to take away and enjoy your treats in one of York’s most beautiful green spaces.

7. Bettys

Eating in at Bettys can feel like an investment (financially, but also in the time you’ll spend queuing). For a taste of the iconic Bettys experience without the price tag, pop in to the shop and pick up some of their Swiss-inspired baked goods to enjoy at home or al fresco (the Museum Gardens are less than five minutes away).

We love – The fondant fancies, novelty animal cakes and pretty macaroons. Their fat rascals are the stuff of legends. 

Seating – If you’re treating yourselves to sitting in, you’ll have the pleasure of heavy silver teapots, white crockery and the famous warm Bettys welcome. Even if it looks busy, it’s worth knowing that there’s a large downstairs area.

8. Crumbs Cupcakery

If cupcakes are your thing, Crumbs Cupcakery is your place. Choose from one of their many flavours and tuck in at an outdoor table with views of York Minster. If the weather’s not kind, there’s a nice relaxed atmosphere indoors.

One of our absolute favourites, Little Arras is a real hidden gem. If you’re knocking up a picnic, the Little Arras ciabatta will make those cheese and pickle sandwiches sing, and it would be rude not to pick up one of their cool cakes for pudding. There’s an ever-changing rotation of delicious bakes that (almost) look too good to eat. It’s a popular spot among locals for an early weekend coffee and pastry.

Fresh bakes, epic sarnies, great coffee and stuffed cookies are the order of the day. It’s a lovely bright space to sit in, or take away and head to the Museum Gardens.

11. The biga+ 

For something a bit different, thebiga+ is a small but spectacular Italian bakery where mouthwatering cannoli and calzone are the order of the day. You can even get fried lasagne! It’s a real gem that’s well worth seeking out.

We love – It’s a toss-up between the calzone and the pistachio cannoli.

12. Haxby Bakehouse Deli

This one is outside York city centre, but we can’t put together a guide to the best bakeries in York without mentioning Haxby Bakehouse. This local bakery supplies their delicious bread to many of the cafes and restaurants in York, but you can visit their shop in Haxby to stock up on many of their iconic bakes. They’ve also recently opened Haxby Bakehouse The Unit, which has more seating.

We love – Their morning buns, hot cross buns, mince pies, loaves…Well, all of it.

13. Partisan

Partisan is a beautiful, independent family-run cafe on Micklegate serving delicious locally sourced food and good coffee. They have a mouthwatering selection of cakes, tarts and scones that are made fresh, and gluten-free and vegan options are always available.

1. Little Vikings I Spy Trail (Recommended by The Sunday Times)

Designed with help from our own children, our free circular walking trail turns a walk round York into a giant game of I Spy. Along the way there are 22 things to spot, from clocks to flags, dragons, cats and other curiosities that you’d otherwise walk straight past. The route takes in the icons too, including the Shambles and York Minster. Go at your own pace, and make time for ice cream, coffee or lunch along the way. 2. York Cat Hunt

York is the purrfect destination for cat lovers, with but carved and sculpted cats perched high on rooftops, chimneys and buildings across the city. Legend has it these lucky cats were originally there to keep rats away and bring good fortune to the people below, but they’ve now been turned into a claw-some walking trail. Following the York Cat Hunt is a brilliant way to get kids involved in a walk around the city. Some cats are easy to spot, others are cleverly hidden, and the hunt soon turns into a city-wide treasure trail for the whole family. Pick up a map from the The Cat Gallery on High Petergate.

3. Little Vikings Snickelways & Silly Street Names Trail

Think you’ve seen York? Think again. Our free family trail sends you off the busiest streets and into the hidden passageways – or snickelways – that give York’s famous for. Along the way, you’ll amble down through ancient alleyways, have a laugh at the daft street names like Whip-Ma-Whop-Ma-Gate and Little Peculiar Lane, and take on fun challenges as you go, snorting along Swinegate, counting fruit on Grape Lane and finding corners that even lifelong locals have missed. Free, available all year, and easy to download or collect from the Visit York Information Centre.

4. York Rivers Trail

The York Rivers Trail follows the River Ouse, linking parks, green spaces and stories across the city. Even better, it’s completely free. Children can talk to the river on your phone, spot the sculptural viewing frames at Leeman Park and Tower Gardens, and collect a trail sticker along the way – a fun way to keep them engaged and involved. There’s no booking needed, just start anywhere along the river and go at your own pace.

5. Walk York’s City Walls

No trip to York is complete without a walk along the medieval city walls, the longest town walls in England at almost 3.5km, and one of the best free things to do in York with kids. Children love climbing the towers, looking down over the streets and seeing what’s going on below. You don’t need to walk the whole circuit either, just pick a section that suits your family, then head back down for lunch or an ice cream/hot chocolate depending on the season. Some sections don’t have railings, so they’re best for children who can walk sensibly beside an adult. The best section for safety runs from Bootham Bar to Monk Bar as it’s railed all the way around. Sadly the walls walk is not suitable for buggies or wheelchairs, and dogs aren’t permitted either. Spring is a particularly pretty time to walk the walls, when the daffodils are out.
