Rain, shine or snowstorm, we’re always in the mood for ice cream. And as luck would have it, York’s full of lovely places to eat it. Here’s our pick of the best, as tested by us (tough job but someone’s got to do it).
Luxury Ice Cream Company (LICC)
This quirky city centre ice cream parlour is a joy, with its vintage style interior and wonderful homemade ice creams. Sit in the cafe, grab a table outside or get a cone to take away and enjoy on a stroll through the streets.
20 Back Swinegate, York YO1 8AD – open daily
La Cremeria/La Cremeria Grande
If you can’t find a flavour that tickles your fancy at this self-styled Yorkshire home of authentic Italian gelato, La Cremeria (and its big brother, La Cremeria Grande), we’ll eat our flat cap. There’s always something inventive just waiting to be tried, but if you’re not in the mood for ice cream, there are lots of other options – sweet and savoury – too. Gluten-free options always available.
20 High Petergate, York (La Cremeria) and 50 Goodramgate, York (La Cremeria Grande) – open daily
Roberto Authentic Italian Gelato
This Italian gelato, made daily on the premises of this lovely independent cafe, has to be tasted to be believed. Take one to eat in Dean’s Gardens (by the Minster, just around the corner) or eat in the small but stylish cafe. Coffee, crepes, cakes and sandwiches also available.
3A Goodramgate, York YO1 7LJ – Closed Mondays
This ever-popular neighbourhood Sicilian trattoria in the award-winning Bishy Road area of York serves gorgeous gelato in generous portions. Eat in the lovely bistro (which warmly welcomes families to enjoy its all-day menu of freshly cooked food) or take out and enjoy at Rowntree Park, around the corner.
Trinacria, 27 Bishopthorpe Road, York – closed Mondays
Two Hoots Ice Cream Boat
York’s first ever ice cream boat, Two Hoots is an absolute must-visit. Regularly moored at the Millennium Bridge during the summer months, they serve really tasty ice cream with river views as standard. Check their Facebook page for their whereabouts as things can change with the weather.
