A turkey the size of a small hatchback? A huge tin of chocolates in shiny, gem-coloured wrappers? Falling asleep in front of the Queen’s speech? Everyone’s got their Christmas traditions, and for our family, Christmas just isn’t Christmas without a trip to the panto at York Theatre Royal. We’ve been going for years, just like so many other loyal York families, and it’s a real highlight of the festivities.
Other pantomimes might have soap stars and other C-listers, but nothing could be as entertaining as seeing what Berwick Kaler and his hugely talented cast have dreamt up this year. Some things are guaranteed: there will be bad gags, local gags and gags that are just for mums and dads; there’ll be Harry Gration and Wagon Wheels, and possibly even a storyline.
This year’s pantomime is Old Mother Goose, not that you’ll necessarily be able to tell from the plot. Whatever the script, it’s bound to be an entertaining, one-of-a-kind show. We’ll definitely be booking our tickets soon, even if that does seem ridiculously early in the year. And we won’t be the only ones; hardcore fans often queue overnight to make sure they get the best seats in the house to the best (and silliest) show of the year. When it comes to the panto, it’s never too early to start thinking about Christmas.
Tickets to York Theatre Royal’s pantomime are on sale from Saturday 1 March 2014.
