Dark Skies Festival 2019

There’s nothing more magical than the dark night sky, and this year’s Dark Skies Festival (Friday 15th February – Sunday 3rd March) is a chance to discover more about the sky above us. Yorkshire’s National Parks are a stargazer’s paradise, with some of the best night skies in the country, and there’s a host of events and activities that are suitable for all ages including guided torchlight wildlife walks, coastal stargazing and solar system scavenger hunts. Nocturnal Goings On. A candlelit evening walk in Staithes 

A candlelit evening 1.5-mile walk exploring the narrow streets and alleys of Staithes, finishing in a local hostelry. On the way, listen to tales of night time activities including smuggling and ship wrecks. Please wear appropriate clothing and footwear. Steep ascents and descents (pavements, roads and steps). Varied and uneven surfaces. Children are welcome but must be accompanied by an adult. Dogs allowed on short lead. Walk subject to weather and ground conditions (at the discretion of the Walk Leader).

Sunday 17 February, 5.30pm to 7pm – Staithes Bank Top car park TS13 5BB (OS Grid Ref: NZ 781 185) – Free but a suggested donation of £2 would be welcome, helping care for the National Park. Booking essential.

Dark Skies – Astro Treasure Hunt

Part of our National Parks Dark Skies Festival 2019. Join us on a space themed treasure hunt as we begin our dark skies festival. Use your starry map to locate the clues to claim your ‘out of this world’ treasure! Please wear appropriate clothing and footwear. Sorry, no dogs. All children to be accompanied by an adult. Suitable for ages 4 and above. No booking required, just drop in anytime.

Perfect Planets

Find out fascinating facts about our planets and make some amazing aliens to take away with you. Sorry, no dogs. Wheelchair accessible. Please wear appropriate clothing and footwear. Dark Skies – Moon Making Madness!

Part of our National Parks Dark Skies Festival 2019. Making a moon is utter lunacy, but we’ll be having a go! 50 years ago man first stepped on the moon, today we’ll be recreating that moment in miniature and making a model moon. Please wear appropriate clothing and footwear. Wheelchair accessible. Sorry, no dogs. All children to be accompanied by an adult. Suitable for ages 4 and above. Booking essential. Dark Skies Rockets and Aliens!

Have a go at making fantastic rockets you can actually launch! Then design a fabulous alien spaceship to take home. Please wear appropriate clothing and footwear. Wheelchair accessible. Dark Skies Moonrock Geocaching

Part of our National Parks Dark Skies Festival 2019. Using one of our GPS units, enjoy a walk searching for space themed clues in hidden boxes along the way. You pay a charge (per family) for the activity plus a refundable deposit for the GPS unit. Please wear appropriate clothing and footwear. Sorry, no dogs. Not wheelchair accessible. All children to be accompanied by an adult. Suitable for ages 4 and above. No booking required, just drop in anytime. The Moors National Park Centre, Danby YO21 2NB. Dark Skies – Super Stars

Part of our National Parks Dark Skies Festival 2019. Have you ever wanted to take a closer look at the stars? Learn about the constellations, galaxies and planets in this special evening session of star gazing with specialist knowledge from the Teesside Astronomical Club. Use the telescopes provided or bring along your own. Please wear appropriate clothing and footwear, and bring a torch. Please note that this event is intended for children/families. Wheelchair accessible. Sorry, no dogs. All children to be accompanied by an adult. Suitable for ages 7 and above. Booking essential. Stargazing at Sutton Bank

Part of our National Parks Dark Skies Festival 2019. Come to see the stars under the dark skies of Sutton Bank with the team from Hidden Horizons. See distant galaxies, star clusters and maybe even a planet through a large telescope. Watch an astronomy themed show in the immersive star dome. Wrap up warm as it can get very cold on a night and bring a torch. Feel free to bring along a pair of binoculars and a blanket to lie on can be great. All children to be accompanied by an adult. Booking essential. Thursday 28 February, 7pm to 9pm – Sutton Bank National Park Centre YO7 2EH – Adult £12, child £8

Dark Skies at Danby

Part of our National Parks Dark Skies Festival 2019. Come and explore the wonders of the winter night sky. Members of Whitby & District Astronomical Society will guide you around the heavens. If conditions are not conducive for observing outside, the universe will come indoors with a presentation on the winter night sky. Wrap up warm as it can get very cold on a night and bring a torch. Soup and hot drinks will also be available to keep you warm. Feel free to bring along a pair of binoculars and a blanket to lie on can be great. Wheelchair accessible. Sorry, No dogs. Dark Skies at Sutton Bank

Part of our National Parks Dark Skies Festival 2019. Come to Sutton Bank to once again join enthusiastic members of The York Astronomical Society for a night of stargazing. There will be a talk in the café followed by sky observing using a range of telescopes of all shapes and sizes. Although the moon will not be visible on this night, viewers can enjoy the wonders of Orion, the planet Mars, the Andromeda Galaxy and many other fascinating objects. Wrap up warm as it can get very cold on a night and bring a torch. Wheelchair accessible. Sorry, No dogs. All children to be accompanied by an adult. Booking essential.
