Bluebird Bakery Acomb

Bluebird Bakery has just added a new cafe/bakery to its small chain of local bakeries, and it’s very family-friendly. It’s a large, relaxed space with plenty of room to sit and enjoy a coffee and something freshly baked. If you have young children, you might even get to enjoy a few minutes’ peace as there’s a children’s corner complete with a little kitchen. If you don’t have time to hang around, they’re more than happy to do coffee, bread and cakes to takeaway. It’s a lovely independent, family-run place and the salted caramel slices are delicous.

Partisan

Partisan is a beautiful, independent family-run cafe on Micklegate serving delicious locally-sourced food and good coffee. The interiors are warm, inviting and homely, and staff are friendly too. Much of what’s on display is for sale: don’t be surprised if you go in for lunch and walk out with a mirror and a bunch of local wild flowers. The brunch menu is really popular, with French toast, all sorts of eggs, shakshuka and full English all extremely tempting options. Children will no doubt enjoy any of the cakes and pastries on offer, but there’s a couple of kids’ options (think tasty toasties). It’s housed in a quirky building so it can be a bit of an obstacle course with a buggy, but it’s worth the effort. Partisan is a popular spot, so be prepared to queue during peak times.

Robinsons Cafe York

Robinsons is a popular neighbourhood cafe on Bishopthorpe Road where you can expect delicious locally souced food, beautifully cooked. There’s a relaxed and warm atmosphere where children are very welcome. Toddlers tuck into croissants and scrambled eggs, while older children are often found piling into the pancake stacks. No bookings, so expect to queue at peak periods.

Spark:York

Spark:York is a place that looks and feels like no other venue in York. It’s a vibrant, relaxed place to eat and drink, with kids or without. A community of small businesses created from old shipping containers, Spark:York has a welcoming atmosphere and diversity of eating, drinking and shopping experiences that make it a popular destination. There’s a changing rota of pop-up bars and restaurants, but if you imagine craft ales, edgy cocktails and the best street food in town, you’re not too far from the mark. The relaxed vibe makes it an easy place to take kids, but it’s also popular with adults for a night out or a cheeky daytime drink with friends.

Although it’s open to the elements, there’s a temporary cover and heaters during colder months, making it a good option all year round. If you’re lucky, you can find a spot on the roof terrace on a warm sunny evening and soak up the rays. Lovely.

Trinacria Sicilian Restaurant York

For traditional Sicilian food in York, look no further than Trinacria. Situated just outside the city on the ever-popular Bishopthorpe Road, Trinacria has become a local institution since it opened. It’s easy to see why: the food is fantastic, the ice creams are out of this world and the service is incredibly friendly. Locals flock here so it can be hard to get a table at peak times, but if you decide to stay and queue, it’ll be worth the wait. There’s no kids’ menu but they’ll happily do small portions of adult meals. It’s less than five minutes from here to Rowntree Park and the river, so it’s a useful place to know.
