Want to explore York on foot with your children, but minus the moaning? Then the Little Vikings I Spy Trail of York is just the thing! Our brand new, free walking of York is available all year round – all you have to do is collect the map and get your shoes and coats on! The map should be all that you need – follow the route and see how many things you can tick off. Top marks if you get them all (some are obvious but others are trickier, so you’ll need to keep your wits about you and don’t forget to look up!).

The best way to discover York is on foot: wind your way down the snickleways, canter down the cobbles and enjoy the street entertainment. One of the best ways to make a walk with kids even more fun is by following a trail, and the York Lucky Cat Trail is one of the best. It’s free too!

Statues of cats have been placed on buildings in York for around two centuries, although statues since removed or rotted are thought to date from medieval times. The original cat statues were placed on buildings to frighten away rats and mice which can carry plague and illness. They were also thought to ward off wandering evil spirits and generally to bestow good luck and good health on citizens who needed feline friends to ensure a good night’s sleep in old and temptingly chewy timber-framed buildings!

Nestled in the heart of the North York Moors National Park, Dalby Forest is your gateway
to adventure, tranquillity, and unforgettable moments. With over 8,500 acres of stunning
landscapes, winding trails, and magical Gruffalo adventures. It’s the perfect place to
connect with nature, whatever the season.

Dalby Forest is situated on the southern slopes of the North York Moors National Park. An
ideal destination for families. In under an hour from York, find yourself embarking on a
bike or walking trail (all abilities; clearly marked) or enjoying our amazing adventure
playgrounds that are suitable for all ages and abilities. The themed kids’ trails are great
fun and teach little ones about the importance of nature, wildlife and the outdoors.
Home to an abundance of internationally important wildlife species, Dalby Forest offers a
chance to see creatures big and small. It’s also a designated Dark Sky Discovery
Site, where you can experience the magic of seeing the Milky Way with the naked eye.
Come rain or shine, day or night, you will have a fantastic forest adventure and create
memories that will last a lifetime.

Good to know – You only pay for parking, making this a brilliant value day out. Don’t miss
the adventure playground but do venture beyond it as there are lots of things to do in the
forest itself. Keep an eye out for special events throughout the year.
