Much loved horse box cafe, The Dark Horse Espresso Bar, now has a brick-and-mortar cafe on York’s popular Bishy Road. Serving breakfast favourites, tasty pastries and excellent coffee, it’s a welcoming place to stop for a drink or something more. Children are warmly welcomed, and there’s a terrace outside if the weather’s good enough. It’s just two minutes from the river and Rowntree Park if you just want a takeaway to enjoy while you stroll.

York Cocoa Works is the place in the only place in York that creates chocolate from scratch, in the grand tradition of York’s world-famous chocolate makers of the past. You can take a little tour of their manufactory, join a workshop or just pop into the cafe for a pick-me-up. As you’d expect, the menu is chocolate-focused and best if you’re in the mood for something sweet rather than savoury. Inside, you’ll find shelves packed with children’s books, relaxed seating and a menu with plenty of child-friendly options alongside good coffee, cakes and light lunches for grown-ups. Step outside and you’re right in the heart of the action. The play areas are moments away, along with the lake, tennis courts, skate park and basketball court. Explore Hungate is another brilliant reading room (cafe/library) from Explore York. It’s spacious with easy access for buggies and wheelchairs, and plenty of indoor space. There’s an outdoor seating area too, if the weather’s good or you just fancy sitting outside. Children will love the lovely little children’s area with books and comfy, colourful places to sit. No promises, but you might just get to enjoy a hot cup of tea or coffee in peace…If you’d like something to eat, there are cakes and tasty breakfast and lunch options too. Just a stone’s throw from York city centre, it’s a great place to escape the crowds or meet friends.

Partisan

Partisan is a beautiful, independent family-run cafe on Micklegate serving delicious locally-sourced food and good coffee. The interiors are warm, inviting and homely, and staff are friendly too. Much of what’s on display is for sale: don’t be surprised if you go in for lunch and walk out with a mirror and a bunch of local wild flowers. The brunch menu is really popular, with French toast, all sorts of eggs, shakshuka and full English all extremely tempting options. Children will no doubt enjoy any of the cakes and pastries on offer, but there’s a couple of kids’ options (think tasty toasties). It’s housed in a quirky building so it can be a bit of an obstacle course with a buggy, but it’s worth the effort. Partisan is a popular spot, so be prepared to queue during peak times.

Not only is The Bar Convent a fascinating place to visit when you’re in York, but it’s also a great place to stop for something to eat and drink. The Bar Convent Cafe is open to all, whether you’re visiting the exhibition, staying in their rooms or just passing. It’s conveniently located, just a five minute walk from York station and York city cente. As well as a beautiful indoor area, there’s a very pretty little garden that’s a bit of a secret among locals. Expect homemade soups, tasty cakes and sandwiches as well as a selection of hot and cold drinks. There are vegetiarian and gluten-free options, and local products are used where possible.

Brew & Brownie Bakehouse

Brew & Brownie Bakehouse is just along the road from its sister cafe and often comes to the rescue of many a cake/coffee-hunter who can’t get a table at Brew & Brownie. Although it doesn’t serve the legendary pancake stacks, Brew & Brownie Bakehouse doesn’t deserve second place: it’s light, airy and a lovely place to sit and watch the world go by. They serve delicious coffee, incredible cakes, salads, sandwiches and their light meals. Although there isn’t a designated children’s menu, we don’t know anyone of any age who would refuse one of their amazing brownies or donuts.

A jewel in the city’s crown, Bettys is the ultimate destination for afternoon tea in York, but it’s also a lovely place for breakfast, lunch and dinner (sometimes with a soundtrack of live piano music!). Despite being York’s most luxurious tearoom, it’s actually very family-friendly, with a children’s menu, space to store your buggy, colouring-in activities and lovely staff who’ll make sure that everyone’s happy. Don’t have time to stop? Why not pick up some of their amazing cakes, teas and biscuits to take home?
