Bluebird Bakery has just added a new cafe/bakery to its small chain of local bakeries, and it’s very family-friendly. It’s a large, relaxed space with plenty of room to sit and enjoy a coffee and something freshly baked. If you have young children, you might even get to enjoy a few minutes’ peace as there’s a children’s corner complete with a little kitchen. If you don’t have time to hang around, they’re more than happy to do coffee, bread and cakes to takeaway. It’s a lovely independent, family-run place and the salted caramel slices are delicous.

Inside, you’ll find shelves packed with children’s books, relaxed seating and a menu with plenty of child-friendly options alongside good coffee, cakes and light lunches for grown-ups. There’s space for buggies, baby-changing facilities and both indoor and outdoor seating, so it works in every season.

Step outside and you’re right in the heart of the action. The play areas are moments away, along with the lake, tennis courts, skate park and basketball court. The River Ouse runs alongside the park too, making it easy to turn a café stop into a riverside stroll. It’s a simple, stress-free place to refuel before heading back out for more adventures.

Partisan is a beautiful, independent family-run cafe on Micklegate serving delicious locally-sourced food and good coffee. The interiors are warm, inviting and homely, and staff are friendly too. Much of what’s on display is for sale: don’t be surprised if you go in for lunch and walk out with a mirror and a bunch of local wild flowers. The brunch menu is really popular, with French toast, all sorts of eggs, shakshuka and full English all extremely tempting options. Children will no doubt enjoy any of the cakes and pastries on offer, but there’s a couple of kids’ options (think tasty toasties). It’s housed in a quirky building so it can be a bit of an obstacle course with a buggy, but it’s worth the effort. Partisan is a popular spot, so be prepared to queue during peak times.

Not only is The Bar Convent a fascinating place to visit when you’re in York, but it’s also a great place to stop for something to eat and drink. The Bar Convent Cafe is open to all, whether you’re visiting the exhibition, staying in their rooms or just passing. It’s conveniently located, just a five minute walk from York station and York city cente. As well as a beautiful indoor area, there’s a very pretty little garden that’s a bit of a secret among locals. Expect homemade soups, tasty cakes and sandwiches as well as a selection of hot and cold drinks. There are vegetiarian and gluten-free options, and local products are used where possible.

Brew & Brownie Bakehouse is just along the road from its sister cafe and often comes to the rescue of many a cake/coffee-hunter who can’t get a table at Brew & Brownie. Although it doesn’t serve the legendary pancake stacks, Brew & Brownie Bakehouse doesn’t deserve second place: it’s light, airy and a lovely place to sit and watch the world go by. They serve delicious coffee, incredible cakes, salads, sandwiches and their light meals. Although there isn’t a designated children’s menu, we don’t know anyone of any age who would refuse one of their amazing brownies or donuts.
