There’s a lot to love about eating out as a family: time to sit around the same table and chat without the distractions of being at home, from the TV’s magnetic draw to the never-ending to-do list. And that’s before we get to the joy of eating a meal that somebody else has made, and not having to do the washing up afterwards. Bliss, especially during the long summer holidays when it can feel like one big cookathon.

We headed along to Byron’s spacious Ousegate restaurant to check it out for ourselves and really enjoyed it. Not the most adventurous of eaters, our children’s eyes lit up at the menu, from indulgent milkshakes to tempting sundaes and delicious sides. The burgers themselves were a total hit – four faultless Beyond Burgers for the veggies and a moist meaty version for the rebellious carnivore – and the kids demolished the halloumi fries without drawing breath. We’re a family that loves a burger, and Byron does them very well, whether they’re meaty or not (no doubt it helps that their meat is sourced from a family-owned butcher in Yorkshire and their vegan burgers are supplied by the legendary Beyond Burger).

Only one of our children (the one who hadn’t filled herself up with a milkshake) claimed to have room for pudding, but when the mint choc chip sundae sharer arrived, everyone wanted an extra spoon so we could all dig in. The service was excellent – friendly and fast – and it was such a treat to enjoy a meal together with no drama, no effort and empty plates all round. The kids have already asked to go back and, with the new summer offer making it more affordable, I’m sure we will.
