Anyone looking for somewhere interesting to eat in York must take a trip down Gillygate, a street that’s positively groaning with excellent independent bistros and cafes. A case in point is Bistro Guy, a sweet little bistro that serves fresh, tasty, modern food at a reasonable price. During the day, sandwiches and soups sit alongside more substantial dishes (as well as a great selection of cakes). In the evening, it turns into a bistro serving more elaborate meals. There’s a kids’ menu that most parents would approve of, and it’s a good spot for Sunday lunch too. The small walled garden and patio is a godsend for those with noisy kids who need to (quietly!) run off some steam between courses.
Best for – relaxed lunches on the patio or in the garden when the weather’s good. Sunday lunch.
