A storytelling workshop with Pizza Express

Once upon a time, three little vikings (and their willing parents) were invited across to Pizza Express in Leeds for a story writing workshop to mark everyone’s dressing-up extravaganza, World Book Day. Pizza being our favourite family food, and reading being our favourite pastime, this was one opportunity we were not going to pass up.

We’re frequent visitors to Pizza Express in York – it’s our children’s first choice destination for their birthday tea – but hadn’t visited the White Cloth Hall branch in Leeds. Nestled behind the Corn Exchange, it’s a light and airy two-storey building with the usual laid-back atmosphere. Our children weren’t quite so laid back when they discovered that the aim of the workshop was to discover how to write a novel in sixty minutes! I’m all for ambition, but even I doubted that the kids would be able to knock out more than a few sentences.

Thankfully, Scribblers HQ were on hand to give us a whistle-stop tour of the basics of storytelling, from character creation to constructing a story, and then let us loose to build up our own tales, one chapter at a time. Having been slightly dubious about having to do so much writing at theweekend, our eight-year-old soon got into it. Once he’d decided on his character – an ordinary schoolboy who also just happens to be a spy – there was no stopping him.A storytelling workshop with Pizza Express Little Vikings

Unfortunately, he had to stop when our time was up, but was quickly consoled by the arrival of places of freshly baked dough balls followed by the much-loved margherita. Our two younger girls, who’d also had a go at creating their own stories (more pictures, fewer words), polished off their pizzas and were delighted by the arrival of the obligatory ice cream. A fun morning with a happy ending.
